Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, the 40-day period of preparation for Easter.

At Mass today, Catholics receive crosses of ash on their foreheads. Receiving ashes is not done simply to show others that we went to Mass or are a “good Catholic” (whatever that means). Rather, these ashes help us to reflect upon our need for God. When applied, the priest says, “Remember you are dust, and to dust you will return.” The wearing of ashes is a way to begin our journey of Lent as we acknowledge the ways in which we fail to let God into our lives and begin seek to a renewed spiritual life.

We created this Spotify playlist for Ash Wednesday inspired by its themes and the Lenten journey we are about to begin.
