This organization aims to share culture through dance by bridging culture gaps and providing low-cost performing arts classes.

This week Grotto catches up with Candice Shanice, who founded DARE Generation. Her organization celebrates diversity in the performing arts and provides classes at an affordable cost.

"Being able to show someone you can express yourself through the arts, and help them in a positive way, that’s what makes my heart happy," she shares.

Video Transcript:

Candice Shanice: My name's Candice Shanice. DARE Generation is a performing arts company and outreach organization.

D = Dream; A = Achieve; R = Reach out; E = Encourage.

Candice: I started it, because I have a passion for the performing arts, and there were so many social injustices going on. I was like, "How can I use the talents that I have to make a difference?" As an organization, we offer low-cost performing arts classes, and then we also do outreach services.

DARE Gen operates in both L.A. and Ghana with their dance company, “K)FA” (Pronounce “Koh-fah”)

Candice: “K)FA” is professional performing arts company. We learn from our team in Ghana; they learn from us.“K)FA” dancers teach the classes in both Ghanaian- and Western-style dancing.

Candice: So you're getting traditional dances from Ghana, you're getting Western societal dance practices.

You may have grown up somewhere else, but we can bridge that gap of diversity through the performing arts. Being able to show someone, you can express yourself through the arts, and help them in a positive way, that's what makes my heart happy.
