Since the early days, the Church has celebrated the feasts of St. Peter and St. Paul together. These two men founded the church in Rome through their preaching, ministry, and eventually their matryrdom.
Peter was chosen by Jesus to lead the Church and was the first pope. He is the patron saint of many, many things, including the papacy and fisherman.
After a major conversion, Paul helped spread Christianity throughout much of the Roman Empire. He is the patron saint of writers, evangelists, and theologians.
“Both apostles share the same feast day, for these two were one; and even though they suffered on different days, they were as one. Peter went first, and Paul followed. And so we celebrate this day made holy for us by the apostles' blood. Let us embrace what they believed, their life, their labors, their sufferings, their preaching, and their confession of faith.” —St. Augustine
